What can a chicken teach you about values?
Recently I came to be looking after a chicken which had been attacked by a fox. I don’t know much about chickens, but the owner was having a fab holiday on the other side of the world...
I took the chicken to the vets and spent time consulting Google as to just how to help a chicken - I knew it was probably in shock. She didn’t seem keen to eat or drink and I had to give antibiotics and pain killers by syringe into her beak. I was interested in what I learnt about myself and my values (as well as how to look after chickens!). I was curious what drove me to suspend other activities so I could spend time talking to the chicken, cajoling her to eat and drink, researching other things to help. Apparently, they like classical music and a ticking clock! Alas it was to no avail in this case. The chicken was not interested in eating or drinking despite being able to. However, I learnt that to me life has value and that is what drove me to care for her. As long as she had life I would do my best. My values determined my behaviour. When we know what our values are, it makes it easier to make decisions - how we spend our time, our money, who we spend time with, the jobs we do... do you know what your values are and how they influence your behaviour?
Some of my top values are: integrity, generosity, listening. Do you know what yours are?
